William Shakespeare was not only one of the most important English Writers of the Renaissance but he is also considered one of the most important ones of universal literature.

It is believed he was born on April 23rd, 1564, due to the fact of his baptism in the Church of the Holy Trinity in Stanford-upon-Avon, on April 26th, (people used to baptize children after 3 days of his birth). He died in the same city on April 23rd, 1616.

William Shakespeare wrote plays and poems. One of his most famous plays is Romeo and Juliet.

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy, which is believed to have been written between 1591 and 1595 and since then it has been adapted not just for theater but also for movies.  I have read and seen it in movies and series many times and every new time I discover something new and value today’s way of living. It is a story about love, a stupid and innocent love, or pure love, depending on the context and on the person who reads it.

However, the story is not just about love, there are many topics that could be seen in it. It also helps us to analyze the society of the time in which it was written, and the role of women in that society. Why were parents, especially the father decides the husband of a young lady of thirteen years old for example? Juliet was at that age when was pledged to get married to Paris.

The love of Romeo and Juliet took place in the city of Verona, Italy is the scenery selected by Shakespeare for many of his stories. Some authors affirm that it was a strategy to be saved from English censorship. Others make emphasis the fact that Italy was the cradle of the Renaissance. It is also believed that Shakespeare could live there in a period in which there is not much information about his life.

When I was reading the story to do this essay and due to the conflict, my country was facing at that time. “People, especially young people were on the street on a strike. It is assumed that many of them could have been killed by public force” It seems to me that humanity as in Romeo and Juliet has been killing each other just for simple quarrels or ideas that should be overcome soon. Some conflicts were inherited from old ideas and people.

The problem between Romeo’s Family, (the Montagues), and Juliet’s family, (the Capulets) is not well explained in its origin, but the two families are enemies, that’s why love between the couple is forbidden and impossible.

Coming back to Colombia, it is the same, along the history of my country two banks of political groups have been fighting for a lot of time. The names of the two groups of politicians have changed, but for me, the ideas are the same. The right and the left, conservatives, and liberals, petristas, duquistas, uribistas, on social media and on the street, people exude love or hate for one group or another everywhere.

But, let me explain my point, Romeo and Juliet starts by saying that two families were in a quarrel for a long time. The members of each family who have fought and died defended their position.

At the beginning of the story two servants of the house of Capulet, Gregory and Sampson provoked some of Montague’s servants into a fight, and the whole story is the same… Romeo killed a cousin of Juliet, and that´s the reason he was exiled by the prince.

“It is a pity or injustice, sometimes those who are the leaders of the conflicts, the ones who make people fight are never at risk or are killed. They know how to move the chess pieces”.

Love is not the only topic involved in the story, I want you to identify others and talk about them in the commentary session of this blog. It seems to me that political power could be another one.

  2. 1. Is a tragedy. A tragic love story, where like the deep feelings of love between the protagonists, there is also a palpable hatred between this story.

    2. Rome and Juliet were written by William Shakespeare.

    3. "Romeo and Juliet" is set in the Renaissance period. The Renaissance was a period of great cultural and intellectual awakening that took place in Europe from the 14th to the 17th century. It was characterized by a renewed interest in classical learning, art, and literature, and a shift towards humanism and individualism. The play is set in the city of Verona in Italy, which was a center of culture and commerce during the Renaissance. The themes of the play, such as the conflict between individual passion and societal expectations, are also characteristic of the Renaissance period.

    4. The individual identity and free will. Romeo and Juliet are not just simply victims of fate, but rather make their own choices and decisions. The play explores the tension between individual desire and societal expectations. Romeo and Juliet defy the expectations of their families and society in pursuit of their love. Renaissance art and literature placed a high value on beauty and aesthetics. This is reflected in the play's poetic language, which elevates everyday experiences to a more poetic and aesthetic level.

    5. The play is set in Verona, Italy, and follows the tragic love story of two young lovers, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. The two families are bitter enemies, but Romeo and Juliet fall deeply in love at first sight and secretly marry. As their families' feud continues to escalate, Romeo is banished from Verona for killing Juliet's cousin, Tybalt, in a street fight. Juliet is then forced to marry another man, Paris, to keep up the appearance of family loyalty. In a desperate attempt to be with Romeo, Juliet fakes her own death, but Romeo, unaware of the ruse, believes she is truly dead and takes his own life. Juliet awakens to find Romeo dead beside her and, unable to bear the pain of living without him, she takes her own life as well.

    7. Romeo Montague: The male protagonist, Juliet Capulet: The female protagonist, a beautiful and headstrong member of the Capulet family who falls in love with Romeo. Friar Lawrence: A Franciscan friar. Mercutio: Romeo's witty and loyal friend. Tybalt Capulet: A hot-headed member of the Capulet family. Nurse: Juliet's trusted confidante and caretaker. Benvolio: Romeo's cousin and friend. Lord Capulet: Juliet's father. Lady Capulet: Juliet's. Lord Montague: Romeo's father. Lady Montague: Romeo's mother. Paris: A nobleman who wants to marry Juliet. I think that in some way I can consider both families as antagonists for continuing to garner so much hatred with reasons lost from past generations, fatally marking the fate of their children, two people who supposedly loved each other and were victims of a hatred alien to them.

    8. The play reflects this tradition in its depiction of the passionate and idealized love between Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet is often seen as a classic example of a tragedy, the tragic flaw is often seen as the impulsiveness and haste of Romeo and Juliet's love, which leads to their untimely deaths. In Romeo and Juliet, psychoanalytic theory might examine the conflict between the conscious desires of Romeo and Juliet and the unconscious forces that oppose their love. In Romeo and Juliet, feminist analysis might examine the ways in which Juliet's agency is limited by the patriarchal society in which she lives. Romeo and Juliet is known for its use of poetic language. The play also makes use of metaphor, simile, and personification to create vivid imagery and convey complex emotions. Also, this play includes the importance of love, loyalty, family, and honor, as well as the destructive nature of hatred and violence. Its artistic purpose is to entertain and engage audiences with a timeless story of love and tragedy, while its extra-artistic purpose may include social commentary on the dangers of prejudice, pride, and irrationality.

  4. 1. The work "Romeo and Juliet" is a tragedy and a play. It tells the story of two young lovers in Verona, Italy.

    2. It was written by William Shakespeare in the late 16th century.

    3. It was written around the year 1595 during the Elizabeth era, named after Queen Elizabeth I.
The Elizabethan period in England saw significant cultural, economic, and political development. The country was in a time of relative peace and prosperity, which allowed the arts and sciences to develop. Many famous authors and painters emerged during this period, including William Shakespeare. London was a cultural and commercial powerhouse, with several theaters, notably the Globe Theatre, where Shakespeare's plays were first shown.

    4. First, the drama reflects Elizabethan England's social and cultural background. The play is set in Verona, Italy, yet it depicts Elizabethan society's complicated social systems and beliefs. The animosity between the Montagues and Capulets, for example, reflects the political and social tensions that existed in England during the period. Second, the drama represents the era's religious and political conflicts. The play illustrates the era's political conflicts, as the ruling elite fought to keep control over the expanding middle class and ordinary people. And, third, the drama demonstrates Elizabethan England's popularity of theater and the performing arts. "Romeo and Juliet" was intended to be staged, and it has many qualities that would have attracted to modern audiences.

    5. The narrative of Romeo and Juliet takes place in late medieval Verona, Italy. The city was known for its affluent families and disputing divisions, which is represented in the core conflict of the narrative between the Montagues and the Capulets.

    6. It illustrates the story of Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, two young lovers from conflicting families in Verona, Italy. Despite their families' hate, Romeo and Juliet fall madly in love and secretly marry, but their happiness is fleeting as their families' quarrel leads to a sequence of tragic events culminating in the lovers' deaths. The play is one of the most popular and lasting masterpieces of Western literature, exploring themes of love, fate, family, and societal expectations.

    7. Romeo belongs to the Montague family. He is a young man that can be described as passionate, and amorous. He is overwhelmed by his desire for Juliet and falls in love with her at first sight. He is also prone to sadness and impulsive behavior, which leads to the play's catastrophic events.
Juliet is the daughter of the Capulet family. She's clever and passionate. She is first opposed to marriage, but she falls completely in love with Romeo. She is also devoted to her family and suffers with the tension between her feelings for Romeo and her duty to her family.
    Other characters are:
    • The Nurse.
    • Lord Capulet.
    • Lady Capulet.
    • Friar Laurence.
    • Lord Montague.
    • Lady Montague.
My favorite character was without a doubt the Nurse, because she always demonstrated her love for Juliet even more than the mother herself. She always supported her even when Juliet wasn't doing the "right thing".

    8. "Romeo and Juliet" is a classic drama that has fascinated audiences for decades. The context of the play mirrors contemporary problems such as religious conflict and political instability. The drama examines numerous axiological values such as love, honor, loyalty, and family, as well as the repercussions of violence and hatred. This work has been studied using a variety of literary perspectives, including psychoanalytic, feminist, and Marxist criticism. Psychoanalytic critique, for example, explores the characters' psychological states and motives, whereas feminist criticism investigates gender roles and power relations. The play has been recognized for its literary personalities, such as Romeo, Juliet, and Mercutio, as well as its profound themes. "Romeo and Juliet" is a piece of art that strives to entertain, inspire thinking, and evoke emotions from its audience.

  8. Romeo and Juliet, though a tragic-love story, offers profound insights into the complexities of social justice and the influence of social environments. Shakespeare vividly portrays the consequences of societal divides and the power dynamics of his time. The feud between the Montagues and Capulets, driven by age-old grudges, highlights the destructive nature of prejudice and the barriers it creates between individuals.

Romeo and Juliet's love, despite being pure and genuine, is overshadowed and ultimately crushed by the weight of social expectations and familial obligations. In today's world, while we may not have feuding families as prevalent, we still grapple with issues of social justice, including racism, classism, and discrimination.

The play's themes resonate as we witness the consequences of societal divisions and prejudices that persist today. Through this story we are reminded of the importance of empathy, understanding, and the need to challenge the societal norms that divide us.

  16. 1. What type of text is Romeo and Juliet?
    a. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is a tragedy. It is not a poem, but a play.
    2. Who wrote it?
    a. William Shakespeare wrote it.
    3. In which period was it written? What are the most relevant aspects of this period?
    a. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ was written around 1594–96. This period is known as the Elizabethan era, which was a time of great importance in terms of cultural, social, and political changes in England.
    b. Here are some relevant aspects of this period:
    i. The cultural influence of the Elizabethan, with flourishing arts, and literature.
ii. The society was mainly patriarchal. This is depicted in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ by the role of Lord Capulet, who promises his daughter Juliet to Paris.
iii. Theatre and Performances. Comedy interludes were common in Elizabethan England.
iv. The influence of Italian Tales. The plot of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is based on an Italian tale translated into English verse as ‘The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet’.
“Romeo and Juliet” definitely touches on a central theme in terms of social justice in two aspects: gender inequality and revenge as a means of justice. On the one hand, women were resigned to what the older members of their family, especially their parents, said. The heads of the family were the ones who were in charge of directing the course of their daughters’ lives, and then it would be the husband who took on that role. However, the love that Romeo and Juliet professed went beyond the social standards of that time, both in how they experienced love and because it was a socially forbidden love. Therefore, this work undoubtedly exposes the family structure and hierarchy that existed at that time. Today, the situation is very different since there is a clear trend towards the freedom of ideas and people, and the constitution supports these ideals. Before, it was family values that prevailed, but today it is national laws that give people the ‘freedom’ to choose what they want to be.

Through this narrative, there is a call for empathy, fostering understanding, and actively challenging social norms. It is also a poignant reminder of the urgent need to strive for a more inclusive and equitable society.
Finally, it is crucial to recognize that, despite social advances in some areas, inequalities and injustices continue to permeate many facets of life, showing the ongoing struggle for true equality and fairness.
