The renaissance, 1485-1649

Levis Leonardo Lozano Hoyos.

The Renaissance was an artistic and cultural movement that inspired a new way of life. It was born in Italy in the XV Century, but it spread worldwide. Renaissance means re-birth. There is still evidence of its influence on art and architecture.

The first Renaissance went from 1400 to 1480 approximately, its center was the city of Florence. Then, came a period called the High Renaissance, which lasted from 1480 to 1520, and Rome was centered where it spread throughout Europe.

Remember that was during the renaissance period when new worlds were discovered, and new ways of seeing and thinking were developed. It was also during this period when Cristopher Columbus arrived in America. (1492). Copernicus established that the system did not revolve around the Earth as was thought until the fifteenth century, but that the sun was the center of the universe, planets, comets, and other celestial bodies revolved around it.

It was during this period when Galileo invented many devices that are still used today. The thermometer was created in 1593. In 1597 he created the Bilancetta compass. The astronomical telescope was made in 1609. Galileo also invented the micrometer which was capable to calculate accurately the distance between each satellite from the Earth. The escape clock was the latest invention created by him. Remember that his vision of the world was censored and persecuted by the Church and the Holy Inquisition. He was considered a heretic.

Another important man of this time was Ferdinand Magellan who sailed around the world.

The renaissance in England came a bit late, due to it flourishing in other parts of Europe when England faced the conflict called “the war of the roses”. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=go98UsxbbJg

The war of the roses ended at the end of the 15th century. The winners were The Tudors Dynasty. Later, the Renaissance entered England through the invitation made by Henry VII to some humanists who helped to develop the renaissance and culture in the UK.

During the late XVI century, England became the most powerful nation in Europe.

Among the most important English Renaissance writers, we can mention Thomas Wyatt, Phillip Sydney, and Shakespeare. In the next link, you will find other names. Find out information about them and leave your impressions about their works in the commentary session.  http://web.cn.edu/kwheeler/renaissance_authors.html.

William Shakespeare was not only one of the most important renaissance English Writers but he is also considered one of the most important ones of universal literature.

It is believed he was born on April 23rd, 1564, due to the fact of his baptism in the Church of the Holy Trinity in Stanford-upon-Avon, on April 26th, (people used to baptize children after 3 days of his birth). He died in the same city on April 23rd, 1616.

William Shakespeare wrote plays and poems. Two of his most famous plays are Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet.

It is said that most of Shakespeare’s plays and poetry were not invented by him. They are based on books he read or stories he heard.

  2. After reading the article on the Renaissance and having discussed this topic during our previous class, I was able to learn about many important aspects that happened at that time and that marked a change in people's lifestyles. The Renaissance gave rise to a new form of cultural and artistic expression. It was a historical moment in which people began to wonder how everything in the world worked. It was that curiosity that led them to make several important discoveries that in some way helped advance society.

  3. It was during the renaissance period when new things were discovered, and new ways of seeing the world were developed. It was in this same Renaissance period that Copernicus established that the system revolves around the sun. Also, Galileo invented many devices that are used today such as the thermometer. For its part, the renaissance came late to England as it was facing the war of the roses. It is important to mention that England had a very important writer who was Shakespeare, who is also considered one of the most important writers in universal literature. As we can see, there were many things that the Renaissance brought with it, new ideas and new artifacts that emerged in this period of history and that marked history with new discoveries and new ways of seeing the world.

  4. After reading the document on renaissance, it can strengthen my knowledge of what the time of renaissance was, and all the change that took place at that time. I learned from the document that at the time of the renaissance people placed reason above other things, there were cultural and social changes. Shakespeare also made a great contribution to literature considering that period, recounting in his works actions and situations that happened during the renaissance. Thanks to the reading, I realized that it is important to know history.

  5. The English Renaissance, a period of cultural, artistic and poetic rebirth that began in the late 15th century and extended until the revolutionary period of the 17th century, is an early culmination of poetic achievements and the beginning of a modern understanding of English poetry. The influence of that era still resonates today in timeless traditions, inspiring experiments, and unprecedented heights.
The main writers of the time include William Shakespeare, Edmund Spenser, Christopher Marlowe, Richard Hooker, Ben Jonson, Philip Sidney and Thomas Wyatt.
Sir Wyatt brought the sonnet from Italy and made it popular in England. He followed the tradition of the Petrarchan sonnet with octave and sexeta. Later changed to English sonnet style by Shakespeare, who divided the sonnet into three quatrains summarized in a couplet. The Elizabethan age produced many beautiful letters. One of the best lyricists was Sir Philip Sidney.

  6. The appearance of the Renaissance was very important for our humanity because in those times they were forced to think, rethink, experiment and explore everything they already knew and wanted to know, to search for new answers to the infinite questions that surrounded the world and the human being. It escapes from ancient and medieval customs, as new ways of doing art, economy, politics are found, undertaken by other intellectuals and artists who marked a before and after.

  7. After having the class related to this topic, I could learn, and clarify aspects about the renaissance, such as relevant and main actors in different fields like in literature, art, religion, poetry, architectic, among others. The english renaissance was in other words an area of cultural revival and poetic evolution; that is why its name, "re-birth" as a meaning. Starting in the late 15th century and spilling into the revolutionary years of the 17th century, stands as an early summit of poetry achievement, the era in which the modern sense of English poetry begins. In literature I have to highlight the great job of William Shakespeare, considered on of the most important renaissance English Writers , but also, one of the important ones od universal literature thanks to his plays, poems and works in general that were, most of them, based on stories he heard, or maybe books he read. Finally, that area was such as significant because of the legacy and teachings that were a big influences, both in writing and speaking English as we know it today.

  8. I learned more about the Renaissance, before I knew about the movement, the important people in that time, about how Shakespeare is the most important character in the literature. The reading about the topic eas really interesting, I want to remar something that I think is very important from literature in that time and it was the variety of texts, about how tragedies, especially those written by Shakespeare are remarkable now, people take them as a reflection in humans behaviors and feelings, how those text are so deep that people feel is like part of the normal life.

  9. As for English literature, I was intrigued by the manner they were written and the issues they dealt with, as we saw in earlier lessons in Deor's poem, which presented stories that connected with what was happening to the writer in the moment. I also discovered that writing has always been one of the ways for humans to express themselves and convey stories, as in the Renaissance, specifically the history plays, which chronicled historical events from the past. 10. I can conclude by saying that the English Renaissance period was a very important historical period due to the artistic and cultural movement that emerged after the bloody wars and battles that were fought in those times and where many authors emerged such as William Shakespeare, Thomas Wyatt, Phillip Sydney, among others. In addition, what I liked most about this theme is that during that period those authors such as those previously mentioned were characterized by writing and popularizing poems and novels (Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and Astrophil and Stella by Phillip Sidney) where the most relevant genre was love usually accompanied by other feelings like sadness, melancholy, pain, etc. I also liked the fact that in these works people could perceive the experiences, thoughts and feelings of the authors who captured in their works impossible loves destined to end tragically, capable of touching the feelings of the readers to the point of allowing them to feel identified with these stories.

  11. What I could conclude about the English Renaissance is that it was a time of "rebirth" in all senses of art and literature. Most of the authors at that time were able to create important contributions to literature through poems and tragedies in which they reflected a particular style of writing. Although not all of them focused on the same points, this time contributed to the expansion of the writers' themes as well. Philip Sidney was one of the major contributors of this time with respect to writing, he contributed with 108 sonnets and 11 songs in his emblematic and important History Astrophel and Stella, in which his particular style of writing reflected the romanticism of the time, even this important author is known for being the patriarch of this type of writing, this way of writing was the inspiration for important and recognized authors such as Shakespare. Shakeaspere was a man who was born in a humble environment, he even did not attend college but that did not prevent him from becoming an important English writer whose works continue to transcend in history and being the subject of study for the beginnings of English literature. Shakeaspere's works reflected important aspects of history, and he also reflected important points in his tragedies. This writer went on to write many important plays such as Hamlet, a particular story about a murdered king who appears to his son seeking to avenge his death. And above all the particular story of Romeo And Juliet, which to this day is still considered an important piece of the renaissance era, in which they included romanticism and tragedy in different writings. Finally, without a doubt this period brought about many changes that are still seen today, because during that time that enriched art in particular, important writers were reborn, important pieces of poems emerged that we can find today.

  12. The renaissance was a movement that significantly influenced many areas such as art, literature, architecture etc. Something that I like a lot about that period of time is that people could express their thoughts in a very creative way either writing poems about their own feelings and experiences or creating fictional stories where they did not put limits to their imagination even representing the stories in theaters which personally is my favorite because in this way they had to show the emotions of the characters, choose their costumes, set the stage to imitate the events and thus bring to life the story itself, so they were in intimate contact with the feelings of the characters and could transmit them to the people who saw them. Besides, all these methods allowed these people to express what they felt, what they thought and how they saw the world. So today we can immerse ourselves in those thoughts and the events of that time through their writings.

The Renaissance was a movement that influenced art, literature, architecture, language.etc. Something that I really like about that period of time is that it showed the beauty of language and literary expressions, creativity in the expression of thoughts was very important, in addition to the influence of God and language for the construction of literary stories, my Favorite is poetry, since by showing it, the feelings to be expressed were expressed to others. That is why, today, we can immerse ourselves in those thoughts and the events of that time through his writings and reflect and experiment for human knowledge.

  14. As a point of view, and considering Romero and Juliet as a successful tragedy by Shakespeare, who wanted to show something of the reality of the Renaissance era in his works, I infer that Shakespeare wanted to show that despite hatred, there will always be love. That is, I could feel how he wanted to transmit mutual hatred between families but at the same time he wanted to transmit that love will always prevail. Just as it prevailed in Romeo and Juliet, two young men who fought for their feelings and their desire to be together, no matter the circumstances. It is a super interesting play because the plot is very unpredictable, each narrated scenario leaves a message and conveys feelings in different ways, which made this tragedy written by Shakespeare a successful play.

  15. The Renaissance period brought a significant change in literature, culture and art. It was born in Italy in the 15th century. During this period the human being had a fundamental role in changing the way of thinking, beginning to explore and experience new things. As evidence of that is art and literature. One of the most representative writers of this era is William Shakespeare, recognized for his plays (comedies, tragedies, stories and tragicomedies) among them we have Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet. A very particular fact about this author is that he did not invent any of those plays or poems, but rather they were adapted or based on stories that he had read. On the other hand, being the human being the focus of this time, the topics that were most written about were romance, envy, ambition. Normal aspects in human life transformed into poetry. Finally, this was a period that brought a new vision for the human being and many advances in architecture, art and literature.

  18. The Renaissance in English literature is one of the most important periods in the history of literature because of its historical transformation, amazing authors, inspiring literature and its use of literary devices, I can also say that the Renaissance changed the way people think about life and culture. There were five reasons why it changed the way people thought: "humanism, trade and exploration, scientific developments, the printing press, and the Reformation". As we can see, the Renaissance was a very influential period of time in England and the rest of Europe, because it brought many cultural advances, among other things.

  20. The Renaissance was both a period in history and an artistic movement. It developed gradually in Italy during the 14th and 15th centuries and then spread across Europe. It came to an end towards the end of the 16th century with the Mannerist style. This period marked the end of the Middle Ages and the start of modern times. European societies underwent huge changes in the 15th century, and so did art. In the 14th century, Italian artists began to revive the heritage of Greek and Roman Antiquity. This is why this period is called the “Renaissance”, a word which comes from the Italian Rinascita, which was first used in the 14th century. The artistic output of the Middle Ages was extremely rich, but the Renaissance triggered a great change in the way the world was represented.

This means that the human being becomes the center of reference from which the sociocultural order is structured, displacing theocentric thinking, which should not be understood as the passage from a believing society to an agnostic or atheist one.

  25. During this period, literature is characterized by a special interest in human behavior as the main theme of the works. In this period poetry and theater stand out above all, one of the most important writers was William Shakespeare, an English playwright, poet, and actor. He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon on April 26, 1564. Around 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems and some other verses, whose authorship is unknown, were written by him. At age 52, he passed away on April 23, 1616. Thus, Shakespeare started writing a series of plays about 1600 for whatever reasons, and these are perhaps the most powerful and profound compositions ever produced by any author.

manuscripts, and the return to the classical ideals that underpinned Renaissance humanism, the intellectual movement that came to define the period.

  29. According to the reading, the English Renaissance was a cultural and artistic movement in England from the early 16th century to the early 17th century. It is associated with the pan-European Renaissance that is generally considered to have begun in Italy in the late 14th century. As in most of the rest of northern Europe, England saw little of these developments until more than a century later. Renaissance style and ideas, however, were slow to penetrate England, and the Elizabethan era in the second half of the 16th century is generally considered the heyday of the English Renaissance. However, many scholars see its beginnings in the early 16th century, during the reign of Henry VIII. A distinguishing feature of the English Renaissance from the Italian Renaissance is the predominance of literature and music over the visual arts; in addition to its later chronology (it developed when in Italy Mannerism and the transition to the Baroque were already taking place).

  50. The Renaissance was a very relevant period for the development of humanity, in which there was a transformation of thought and the way of seeing reality. At that time, various devices were invented, such as the telescope, the compass, the micrometer, and the printing press, among others, which served to verify that some knowledge, considered by the Catholic Church as dogma, was false. For example, Copernicus verified with Galileo Galiley's telescope that the Sun was the center of the universe and that the planets, comets, and other celestial bodies revolved around it. In addition, this artistic and cultural movement gave priority to reason, science, new knowledge, culture, and literature. It can be said that it was like a light that illuminated the progress of humanity. Moreover, this revived the cultural ideas, sciences, and artistic creations of ancient Greece and Rome. It was born in Italy and spread throughout the world. In England, this movement came late, due to the conflict called the War of the Roses. Henry VII invited some humanists, who developed this renaissance in the United Kingdom. At the end of the 16th century, this nation became the most important in Europe. Now, the most important themes of this movement are love, nature, mythology, and the enjoyment of life. And of course, it should be noted that one of the most important English writers of this time was William Shakespeare with his works Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet.

  53. The renaissance marked the end of the Middle Ages and also marked a different way of thinking and a different way of doing things. The term Renaissance, deriving from the French for "re-birth," is a name retroactively bestowed by 19th-century thinkers, who distinguished the era by its revivals: a renewed interest in ancient languages, the recovery of antique manuscripts, and the return to the classical ideals underlying the era's defining intellectual movement, Renaissance humanism. This era is filled with many changes among them England became the most powerful country in Europe, new worlds were found, and new ways of seeing and thinking emerged. In addition, literature developed in this period, with authors such as Shakespeare's plays on the lives of monarchs, Richard III and Henry V, as well as Christopher Marlowe's Edward II. London's growing population, wealth and desire for spectacle gave rise to a dramatic literature of remarkable diversity, quality and scope; the historical play, portraying English or European history, was a popular genre at the time.

It also gave place to important discoveries, for instance, Christopher's Columbus arrival to America, Copernicus' theory and Galileo's inventions. Besides, during this time remarkable writers like Shakespeare, Thomas Wyatt, and Philip Sydney emerged to contribute to the foundations of English literature in such a way that many words and phrases found in their writings are immensely used up to this day. All in all, the Renaissance gave a U-turn to literature, and the world's literacy would not have been the same without it.

  57. Renaissance literature can be viewed as a return to the literary forms of antiquity, such as satire, epic poetry, and theatrical dramas or comedies. Renaissance in literature include the doctrine of humanism, a philosophical school of thought that placed importance upon human potential and the ability to find meaning and value in earthly life, rather than merely in the afterlife. Many works of Renaissance literature also expounded upon the idea, taken from antiquity, of the “Great Chain of Being,” a philosophical doctrine that stated that every object in the entire universe occupied a place on a pre-designed hierarchy, depending on the amount of life force it possessed. Authors during the Renaissance period often wrote in the same styles and genres as did classical authors, which served to revive the genres and literary styles of antiquity. As a result, poetry, theater, social critique, and political commentary re-appeared in European literature.

The centuries of the European Renaissance brought the philosophy and learning of antiquity to the forefront of European minds and culture, but it also saw the rise of many new technologies. In terms of the rise of Renaissance literature, the most important of these technologies was probably the movable-type printing press, invented by Johann Gutenberg, probably in 1439. Prior to the advent of Gutenberg’s printing press, book manufacture was a laborious and expensive process. Books were copied out by hand, usually by monks, who had control of both the language used and the subject addressed.

And about Thomas Wyatt, Sir Philip Sidney, and William Shakespeare, they were all significant poets and writers of the English Renaissance period.

Thomas Wyatt (1503-1542) is often credited with introducing the sonnet form to English literature. He was a courtier and diplomat, who is best known for his love poetry, which often explores themes of unrequited love, betrayal, and desire.

Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586) was a soldier, courtier, and writer, who is considered one of the most important figures of the Elizabethan era. He wrote poetry, prose, and drama, and is best known for his pastoral romance, "Arcadia," and his sonnet sequence, "Astrophil and Stella." Sidney was also a patron of the arts and a prominent member of Queen Elizabeth I's court.

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is widely regarded as one of the greatest playwrights and poets in the English language. He wrote numerous plays, including tragedies like "Hamlet," "Macbeth," and "Othello," comedies like "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "Twelfth Night," and historical plays like "Henry V" and "Richard III." Shakespeare is also known for his sonnets, which explore themes of love, beauty, and mortality.

  59. Renaissance literature meant the return of the classical style of learning that had largely been ignored during the Middle Ages because most writers glorified the Catholic Church and its teachings. As citystates began to prosper, religious corruption increased. As a result, the influence of the Church was beginning to weaken.

Renaissance writers were able to spread their ideas and incorporate new knowledge such as languages and values as they travelled through Europe. This shift in learning from relying on all wisdom from the Church to developing understanding and reason exacerbated appreciation for the human individual. That concept was represented by the movement of humanism

Particularly in the areas of mathematics, astronomy, and medicine, there was a significant intellectual contact between Europe and the Islamic world throughout the Renaissance. Islamic thinkers who made important contributions to disciplines like philosophy and medicine include Ibn Rushd (also known as Averroes in the West) and Ibn Sina (also known as Avicenna), whose writings were widely translated into Latin and studied by European academics. In fact, it is thought that the revival of Islamic classical literature was a key factor in the rise of Renaissance humanism.

The renaissance not only had a historical impact but also a social one, it caused human beings to think, experience, and question everything that existed or happened in the world. On the other hand, one of the symbols of this wife was Shakespeare who also made a great contribution to literature considering that period, recounting in his works his actions and situations that occurred during the Renaissance. He was always a pioneer in filling humanity with works that will represent human reality, love, envy, war, ambition, etc. all based on his experiences, on how he was a spectator of the cultures and social behaviors of that time.

It did not only influence the are and literature but the technology as well. A lot of inventions emerge during this period of time, as the ones mentioned in this blog. All of this could influence in the reason why the way lots of things are set in certain way nowadays

Personal thoughts are the renaissance was a big awakening for people and help to focus in play and stories that could be about daily life or the situation commonly present in people problems such as the prohibited love in Romeo & Juliet by Shakespeare that has been one of the most influential story until theses day in the XXI century.

I took the time of researching a bit of one of the story suggested in this blog and I got amazed by the plot of it. A Woman Killed with Kindness by Heywood, Thomas who was an English playwright and poet who was very famous during the Elizabethan era. The play tells the story of a woman named Anne who is betrayed by her husband John's infidelity with her friend and neighbor, Susan. John is overcome with guilt and remorse, and he tries to make it up to Anne by showering her with kindness and gifts. However, his actions only serve to remind her of his betrayal, and she eventually dies of a broken heart. This story is notable for its psychological realism, its exploration of the themes of marital infidelity, forgiveness, and redemption, and its use of the domestic setting as a stage for dramatic conflict. The play is also noteworthy for its portrayal of women as complex and sympathetic characters.

So, I can tell that there are of things from this era that I could love. I am not a frequent reader but I could try reading some of these book.

During this time, literary and linguistic texts vividly reflect the complexities of social justice in that era and how we still resonate with those struggles today. Discrimination based on race, gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, nationality, education level, and different abilities was palpable in many of these works, showing us that the challenges of social justice are persistent and universal throughout history. 68. While the period witnessed a flourishing of arts and culture, it was also marked by profound inequalities. Women, restricted by societal norms and patriarchal structures, faced significant barriers to education, employment, and political participation. Their roles were largely confined to domestic spheres, with limited opportunities for autonomy or self-expression. Religious institutions wielded considerable influence, often reinforcing traditional power dynamics and justifying inequalities through theological interpretations. However, the Renaissance also saw the emergence of humanist ideas that challenged established norms, advocating for the inherent dignity and rights of all individuals regardless of gender or social status. Despite having more freedom, people continued to feel pressure from the crown and the church. So related to social justice issues as education for example during this decade was very limited and mostly for men because woman's role was limited only to having children.

  70. The Renaissance, from 1485 to 1649, was a time when people made a lot of new discoveries in art, science, and thinking. But there were also a lot of unfair things happening. Even though people were learning new stuff, society was still very divided. Rich and powerful people had a lot of control, while many others were poor and didn't have many rights. This made life hard for most people. Nowadays, we've made some progress, but there are still problems like unfair treatment and not enough opportunities for everyone. The Renaissance reminds us that we all have potential to do great things and that we need to keep trying to make things fair for everyone.

The Renaissance era, spanning from the 14th to the 17th century, witnessed a remarkable revival of art, culture, and intellectual inquiry in Europe, yet it was also marred by pervasive social issues. Racism pervaded as Europe embarked on exploration and colonization, with Africans, Native Americans, and other indigenous peoples subjected to dehumanization and exploitation. Inequality persisted, fueled by feudalism, widening the chasm between the wealthy elite and impoverished peasants. Gender roles remained deeply entrenched, relegating women to limited societal roles despite notable exceptions. Religious turmoil and intolerance characterized the period, with the Protestant Reformation sparking conflicts and persecution, alongside discrimination against religious minorities. Despite these challenges, the Renaissance laid the groundwork for subsequent social and political transformations, albeit with enduring legacies of inequality, racism, and intolerance.
